This presentation is prepared by MSU Denver and will have me, Luis, as the presenter. This is a description of talking points: Many of our students have a lot of other responsibilities and often times have to or feel like they have to let school suffer because of other commitments. The ones that are the hardest for students to set boundaries for are with families. For example, students have to translate for their families when they go to doctor’s appointments, translate legal bank documents, help drive them around when cars are in the garage, etc. While these commitments are incredibly important, how do we help students set boundaries of what they can and can’t do to give them the time to be successful in school? Some of our students’ families also do not yet understand how much time students have to dedicate to college and how they need a quiet space without a lot of noise or interruptions. How do we help students convey to their families how much time and energy needs to be spent on college and how spaces, where they can focus, are essential to their success? I think it is incredibly important to also recognize that many students have deep cultural values of family being deeply important and that family comes first. How can we help students continue to respect and live out their cultural beliefs while staying successful in school?
