Educational Equity & Community Organizing

During COVID-19

Education Equity and Community Organizing during COVID-19 walks you through the local education landscape and the effects of COVID-19 on an already inequitable system that is our education system here in Colorado. What are the most pressing issues? How is COVID-19 exacerbating existing inequities and how can we elevate the voices of parents, students and teachers during this time. What does that look like? Nick Martinez (Co-Executive Director of Transform Education NOW) and Felipe Vieyra (Lyra Denver Director) will walk you through these questions and leave you with the tools needed to further engage in your educational equity advocacy and an understanding on how to best organize the community during the time of COVID-19.

Guest Speakers: Felipe Vieyra (DU Puksta Alum '12) & Nicholas Martinez (CU Puksta Alum '12)

Nicholas Martinez is the Executive Director of Transform Education Now. He previously worked as a community organizer at DSST Public Schools, the highest performing network of schools in Denver.  As an organizer he helped to elevate parent voice and experience to demand change.  Before organizing with DSST, Nicholas spent 4 years teaching middle school history in Southwest Denver, where he formed deep bonds with his students and the families he served.

Colorado at Boulder where he worked to ensure access and support to low income students and students of color with the Student Outreach and Retention Center for Equity.  It was during his time with SORCE that he became conscious of the intentional and systemic educational inequality that ensures that marginalized communities are denied opportunity.  Shaped by his own educational experiences and through the stories of the families he has served, Nicholas is committed to fighting alongside communities to create a more just education system for all, because all kids deserve a life of opportunities.

Felipe Vieyra is currently the Lyra Denver Director. In this role he gets to support the great work that innovation zones are doing through building advocacy, community organizing and community partnerships so that we can empower teachers, elevate the importance of innovation during this time. His previous positions include working as a Director of Programs and Organizing for Leadership for Educational Equity and as a Bilingual Organizer with Together Colorado where he led organizing teams around the statewide minimum wage increase, transit equity work, local school organizing and various other campaigns. He was also a Program Director at the Colorado Rapids Youth Soccer Club where he implemented and expanded an outreach program for low-income Latinx players to join and grow as athlete-scholars and as the Southwest Denver Community Organizer for Stand for Children. Felipe is active in the Denver metro community by being involved with various different boards and commissions. He is currently the co-chair of the Young Latino Philanthropist, on the Colorado Peoples Alliance C3 board and the Padres y Jovenes Unidos Action Fund board. He also coaches competitive soccer with Club C&C and loves volunteering his time to issues that he cares about.
